The Watermelon Eating Contest
Melanie is consumed by her campaign to teach her low-income summer school students that they’re playing into racist stereotypes by participating in a watermelon eating contest. Despite all her efforts she fails to prevent the contest and after a haunting nightmare, Melanie sets the school on fire and winds up in jail.
In the designs I was playing around with the idea to keep Melanie as neutral as possible while the students are vibrant and bring in the outside world to the gray prison like school enviroment.
We were also interested in keeping the three spirits costumes black and white to separate the world of the living from the spirit world.
